Camping the Yellow house.
“Camping the yellow house” was a title of an exhibition I held the summer of ’01 in a historical yellow house in Reykjavik. Young artists had squatted the house for the use of a gallery and there were art exhibitions, concerts and happenings held there for a couple of years or until the city of Reykjavik tore it down to build skyscrapers.
My exhibition in the house was about the history of the house itself as a breathing, living space through the years and therefore tangled in some history of Reykjavik as well. I found all kinds of people who had in some periods of their lives lived or dwelled in the house and I interviewed them and documented the interviews on tape. I for instance interviewed the family of the man who built the house hundred years ago and as well a famous old Icelandic writer Elias Mar (deceased now) but he grew up in the neighbourhood from the 1930´and was a regular guest at this house as a child and teenager. Then I interviewed the former leaders of the Icelandic gay community whom had their first public office in the house witch was always referred to as „the yellow house“ from that time on. Then I also tok interview´s to the artist/squatters who told me about the brake in and the purpose of them running this art squat but as well as making a living space for Young artist they were also protesting the plans of Reykjavik city to tear the house down (and with it part of the Reykjavik Saga) to build ugly skyscrapers.
